Flower Power

Flower Power

Got a room in your house that feels drab or outdated? You don’t have to remodel or redecorate—just buy a bouquet! Flowers are a simple, inexpensive way to instantly brighten up a room, and some kinds of flowers give you more bang for your buck. “You can always get carnations, but I’d probably go with roses, lilies, or daisies. Rather than muted colors or pastels, choose really vibrant colors like deep violet, bright orange, intense gold, or vivid pink,” suggests Walt Engel, owner of Broyles Florist in Johnson City. “We carry almost every color, and if we don’t have the one you want, we can get it within a day.”

Flowers also make thoughtful gifts, whether your intention is to woo your significant other, console a grieving friend, or just make someone happy. “A beautifully arranged bouquet expresses a feeling that can’t be put into words, and that’s important,” says Walt. “Flowers bring a smile to your face. They cheer you up, create a happy or comforting inner feeling with no words spoken.”

If you’re looking for the perfect bouquet, consider the occasion and the environment, Walt advises. No matter how beautiful they are, brightly colored flower arrangements are generally inappropriate for funerals, and you wouldn’t want to give your girlfriend a bouquet of black roses. Also, many hospitals and nursing homes have restrictions that apply to flowers, so check first to make sure your gift will be allowed in. Lastly, says Walt, “When ordering flowers for an office or a school building, you’ve got to think about mobility. If you buy an enormous flower arrangement, how are they going to get it home?”
