With a population of more than 66,000, Johnson City is the 9th largest city in Tennessee. The Johnson City, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area covers Carter, Unicoi, and Washington counties, which have a combined population of more than 200,000. Along with neighboring cities Kingsport and Bristol, Johnson City is a part of the larger Tri-Cities area. Communities within Johnson City include Gray, Boones Creek, and Mountain Home. Nearby Jonesborough, Tennessee’s oldest town, is the county seat of Washington County.
Framed by the Watauga River and the Nolichucky River to the north and south and by the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and west, Johnson City has an area of 43.3 square miles, including 0.3 square miles of water. Our natural and geographical features include Roan Mountain, Buffalo Mountain, and Boone Lake, all of which are easily accessible and open to the public.
