We Are Just Right for… Retirees & Golden Agers

You’ve raised a family, worked hard all your life, and weathered life’s many ups and downs, and now you’re ready to retire, relax, and reap the rewards of a life well lived. Well, you’re in luck, because you’ve come to the right place! Recognized and commended for its characteristics by Retire Tennessee and the American Association of Retirement Communities, Johnson City is an ideal place to spend your retirement years.  Visit www.tnvacation.com/retire-tennessee/community/washington-county for more information.  Tennessee was named one of the top five retirement destinations in the country by Kiplinger, June 2016.

A robust downtown culture, a climate that’s perfect for gardening, and the absence of a state income tax are just a few of the reasons people choose to relocate here after they retire. Another enticement is the superb medical care provided by our area physicians and specialists, many of whom were trained at ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine, ranked 7th in the nation for rural healthcare by U.S. News & World Report.

Seniors looking to stay active will never be bored in Johnson City! The Memorial Park Community Center hosts a calendar full of social events for seniors and retirees, published monthly in the local Senior Lifestyles magazine. The magazine is free and can be found outside most local grocery stores.  The Jonesborough Senior Center is also a community focal point for people over 50 years of age.  The center provides a place to be active, fit and connected, with a focus is on healthy aging through social engagement, physical well-being, civic involvement, creativity, and lifelong learning.

There’s also the Old Timers Hiking Club (www.oldtimershikingclub.weebly.com), a social group for the young at heart that meets every Monday and Wednesday to embark on hikes in a wide range of distances and difficulty levels at some of our region’s loveliest locations. The club has been going strong since 1991 and welcomes visitors and new members alike. It’s a great way to stay active and social while experiencing East Tennessee’s outstanding natural beauty!
